The difference we want to make
Diverse Minds has grown from a parent-led idea into an established Isle of Man community organisation.
So far: regular support meetings, community events, awareness campaigns, free Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyards — and advocating for change.
An advocacy milestone
We presented a petition to Tynwald calling for annual neurodiversity and inclusive-practice training for education staff.
We've also taken part in major community events and fundraising challenges — the Parish Walk, the World Pilates and Wellness Festival, and Miles That Matter.
Success for us is...
Genuine moments matter more to us than numbers. This is how we know our work is making a difference.
- A family finding somebody who understands.
- A parent discovering a service they didn't know existed.
- A child being better understood at school.
- A young person feeling recognised for what they can do, rather than constantly being defined by what they find difficult.
- A conversation changing someone's understanding of neurodivergence.
And ultimately, it is helping create an Isle of Man where neurodivergent children and young people feel understood, included, supported and celebrated.
Our future ambitions
- Expanding our family support and awareness work
- Creating more workshops, activities and events
- Developing accessible information and resources for families
- Increasing collaboration with schools, professionals, businesses and community organisations
- Continuing to advocate for improved neurodiversity understanding and inclusive practice
- Developing a fund to help children who face barriers to accessing traditional education, including access to appropriate online learning where possible
- Working towards having our own community hub where families can access information, support, activities and resources
- Growing the Better Together Awards of Excellence into an annual celebration of children and young people across the Isle of Man
What does community mean to Diverse Minds?
Somewhere to turn when you don't know what's next. Someone who understands without needing the whole story. Progress celebrated, hard patches shared.
And it's families, professionals and businesses across the Island, pulling in the same direction.
Our motto says it best:
Better Together.
In families' own words
"Laura is testing a family story"
"“Being part of a community of parents who all understand our difficulties has made me feel heard and not alone. This road is hard enough with all the ignorance we endure on a daily basis.”"
"“I was anxious about coming to a Diverse Minds meeting initially, as I was in a very difficult space and so was my child. Everything just seemed too overwhelming, but I was desperate for some sense of solidarity, something or someone to help me just hang on. Diverse Minds Community has become my biggest support, an integral part of my own self-care and maintaining positive mental health, as well as a place where I feel seen, understood and cared about. I have met the most wonderful parents, all with different stories, circumstances and at different stages of their journey, but I feel such a strong sense of community and affinity with each and every one of them. At Diverse Minds meetings, nothing is taboo. No subject is too scary to talk about and no emotions are too raw to show. I have found a community that helps me feel that I am not alone, and that there is strength and hope to be found in coming together to listen, support or simply hold space for one another. These meetings are an incredibly valuable and treasured part of my life now.”"
"“I reached out to DMC as I already knew Nichola and felt comfortable telling her our story and knew that I could confide in her. Nichola offered support and shared experiences she had also had with her own children, which helped us understand things massively. As a mother of three children, this was a new experience for us and we weren’t overly knowledgeable. DMC helped us on our journey because suddenly there were other parents like us, in the dark and not knowing where to turn. Everyone offered their advice, shared what helps them and helped us understand things more clearly. If you’re having a bad day, you can just put it in the group without any judgement. Thank you for saving us.”"
Better together with our supporters
We'll celebrate the organisations and businesses who support our work here as partnerships grow. If you'd like to support neurodivergent children, young people and their families on the Isle of Man, we'd love to hear from you.
Every fundraiser makes the next thing possible
Fundraising powers our meetings, awareness work, events and resources — and each one has made the next step possible.
