About us

About Diverse Minds Community

An Isle of Man non-profit for neurodivergent children, young people and their families. We connect families, share information, and push for a more understanding, inclusive Island.

Our story

Who are we?

Diverse Minds Community was founded by Nichola Whitlam-Beckett — parent-led, and built from lived experience.

An idea for somewhere families could connect has grown into a community organisation working for awareness, advocacy and positive change across the Isle of Man — carried by families, volunteers, professionals and local businesses who share one belief: understanding makes an enormous difference.

"As a mum raising neurodivergent children, I experienced first-hand how overwhelming it can be trying to understand different needs, navigate services, find the right support and advocate for your child."

Our why

Why was Diverse Minds created?

No family should have to navigate neurodivergence feeling isolated, judged or unsure where to turn.

So we built the kind of community families needed: welcoming, non-judgemental, and full of people who understand. And we've grown beyond support alone — challenging stigma and pushing for an Isle of Man where neurodivergent children and young people are understood for who they are.

Our mission

To support, connect and advocate for neurodivergent children, young people and their families — while raising awareness, breaking stigma and helping to build a more understanding and inclusive Isle of Man.

Our name

What does the name Diverse Minds mean?

Something very simple: no two minds work in exactly the same way. People think, learn, communicate and experience the world differently — differences that deserve understanding, not judgement. Our name celebrates them, and the strength of bringing different minds together.

Better Together.

Who we support

Everyone is welcome here

Who is the community for?

First and foremost: neurodivergent children and young people, and the parents, carers and families supporting them.

We also welcome anyone who wants to learn — and we work with the schools, professionals and businesses building a more understanding Island alongside us.

Is there an age range?

Our focus is children, young people and the families raising them — with no strict age cut-off for parents and carers seeking information or community.

You don't need a diagnosis

There is no requirement for a formal diagnosis to be part of Diverse Minds Community.

Diagnosed, waiting for an assessment, still questioning — or simply needing more understanding and support. Families are welcome at every stage.

There's no membership fee, and regular support meetings are free — unless a particular event says otherwise.

What does neurodiversity mean to us?

Neurodiversity recognises that human brains naturally work in different ways. Differences like these can shape how somebody experiences, processes and interacts with the world:

  • Autism
  • ADHD
  • Dyslexia
  • Dyspraxia
  • Tourette's
  • Other neurodevelopmental differences

For us, it's simple: less judgement, more understanding. Every child is an individual — and we focus on their strengths, individuality, achievements and potential, not just their challenges.
